Mary's Song - Day 5

Day 5 - Morning

Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.
from Matthew 1

The birth of Jesus Christ took place in a way that assures us that God is engaged with his broken people. The manner of Mary’s pregnancy was shameful, and it is unlikely her proclaiming the angel’s message would have brought anything but more shame. The genealogy that begins Matthew bears witness to this also, that God works in and through and near us, his broken people. He is Emmanuel, God with us.

Because He has inclined His ear to me,
Therefore I shall call upon Him as long as I live.

The Song of Mary with Response
My soul magnifies the Lord.
My spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior,
for he has looked at the humble state of his servant.

You see us, as we are.
You are our Savior, and we rejoice.
Each day become larger in our hearts.

For behold, from now on, all generations will call me blessed.
For he who is mighty has done great things for me.
Holy is his name.
His mercy is for generations of generations on those who fear him.
He has shown strength with his arm.

Your name is holy!
Holy, holy, holy!
And yet, you hear us.
You show us a mercy stronger than sin.

He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He has put down princes from their thrones.
And has exalted the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things.
He has sent the rich away empty.

The lowly know you
Because the lowly need you.
The hungry are filled
Because they say,
Give us this day our daily bread.
God, we are lowly.
We are hungry.

He has given help to Israel, his servant,
that he might remember mercy,
As he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and his offspring forever.

We are your servant.
In Jesus, we are Abraham’s offspring —
Living in your promise to him.
Make us a blessing.
Move us to bless those around us.

The Jesus Creed
The greatest is, ‘Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one:
you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’
This is the first commandment.

The second is like this,
‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Come Lord Jesus.
